The Cathedral School of Saint Mary school garden is named in honor of Monsignor Edward Matocha. Monsignor Matocha came to Austin in 1947 and at the time was the only ordained Catholic priest in the area. While in Austin he helped start the Austin Diocese, stood second in command to its bishops and was seen as the anchor and intricate part of the diocese’s history. Monsignor Matocha was the rector of the Cathedral from 1990 – 2000 and an avid gardener.
The garden provides a sanctuary in the heart of the city and is a space for Cathedral School students to learn and explore as well as develop a love for God's natural nourishment. Faculty incorporates the garden in academic lessons in areas of science, math, reading, and art throughout the school year. We invite you to visit our urban garden!
